Amendment 13
What is Amendment 13?
As many of you know Florida voted to pass Amendment 13 in the recent election. This Amendment prohibits wagering on live dog racing, including Greyhound races, by 2021. This bill unfortunately offers no financial assistance for dogs affected. 100+ non-profit Greyhound adoption groups strongly opposed this amendment.
What it means for Greyhounds?
Greyhound athletes require a high level of care to keep them safe and healthy during their careers. With 11 tracks in Florida closing, racing owners are losing their livelihoods and will no longer be able to provide for the dogs they love. The tracks can, and will, begin shutting down as early as January 1st, 2019 and must be closed by December 31st, 2020.
Over the next two years there will be roughly 8,000 dogs displaced from racing kennels in Florida and another 7,000 coming out of breeding and finishing kennels all over the US as a result of these closings. Adoption groups will largely be responsible for covering the cost of transporting, vetting, housing, and feeding these dogs.
